5 Things You Can Do to Help Coral Reefs

June is National Oceans Month, a time to appreciate the natural beauty of the oceans around us and reflect on what we can do as individuals to help save and preserve threatened ocean ecosystems.

Coral Restoration Foundation

Florida's Coral Reef is the third largest barrier reef in the world and the only barrier reef in the continental United States. It now hosts just two percent of the coral populations present in the 1970s. Based in Florida, the Coral Restoration Foundation has developed a method to grow coral in nurseries, then outplant it to restore coral reef. Since 2007 they've returned more than 220,000 critically endangered corals to the reef. This year we're honored to partner with the CRF, inspired by their mission and the natural beauty of coral reefs around the world, we asked the experts for actions we could take to help preserve and restore coral reefs.

5 Things You Can Do

Voting is one of the most powerful tools we have to drive change and protect our environment. By voting for candidates that support environmentally conscious values, you can help shape policies that safeguard marine life and our oceans. Electing public officials who advocate for smart ocean policies can lead to the implementation of regulations that reduce pollution, protect marine habitats, and promote sustainable fishing practices. To make informed decisions, research candidates' stances on environmental issues and their track records.

Educating yourself on the issues facing our reefs is crucial. Coral reefs are threatened by climate change, pollution, overfishing, and destructive fishing practices. By understanding these issues, you can better appreciate the complex dynamics at play and the urgency of protecting these ecosystems. Numerous resources are available, including documentaries, scientific articles, and educational websites, which provide in-depth information about coral reefs and the challenges they face. Knowledge empowers you to make informed decisions and take meaningful action in your daily life to support reef conservation efforts.

It's important to remember that all waterways lead to the ocean, making it crucial to be mindful of the products and practices we use that can harm marine life. Many everyday products, such as certain sunscreens, contain chemicals that are harmful to coral reefs. Additionally, unsustainable fishing methods and pollution from agricultural runoff contribute to the degradation of marine ecosystems. By choosing eco-friendly products and supporting sustainable practices, you can reduce your impact on the ocean. Understanding the connection between our waterways and the ocean helps underscore the importance of protecting all water bodies, not just the ocean itself.

Making conscious choices about your diet can have a significant impact on the environment. Reducing meat consumption, for example, can lower your carbon footprint and reduce the demand for resources that contribute to deforestation and habitat loss. The meat industry is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to global warming and ocean acidification, both of which are harmful to coral reefs. By incorporating more plant-based meals into your diet, you can help reduce these environmental impacts.

Sharing the mission of ocean conservation with friends and family can amplify your impact. By educating others about the importance of protecting our ocean environments and the incredible biodiversity they support, you can inspire them to act. Equip them with the knowledge, resources, and tools they need to make environmentally conscious decisions. Social media, community events, and personal conversations are great ways to spread awareness and engage others in conservation efforts. The more informed and motivated people are, the greater the collective effort to preserve our oceans for future generations.
