Who We Are

Who We Are

Sea Bags start life as sails, conditioned by days on the water, and are carefully transformed into nautically inspired tote bags and accessories. We keep durable sail cloth out of landfills and turn treasured material into keepsakes people actually want, use, and cherish for years.

How We Started

How We Started

Founded on the working waterfront in Portland, Maine over two decades ago, Sea Bags has been making the go-to tote bag for fishermen and fashionistas alike. In fact, one of our early sail bag designs was made from an old sail for a local fisherman who used the durable design to tote his tools to and from the wharf daily. The original bag, fondly referred to as the “Jeb Tote” in honor of the fisherman who carried it, is still intact today and inspired the design of our Wharf Tote bag. Influenced by the character of the Maine coast and working waterfront, Sea Bags headquarters are still based on the wharf where it all began still proudly making every Sea Bag from recycled sail cloth in Maine.

A weathered Sea Bags canvas Jeb tote bag with rope handles rests on a concrete surface in front of a waterfront dock, surrounded by boats and old buildings.

A large white Jeb tote bag with rope handles sits on a wooden dock, with water and a distant shoreline in the background, capturing the coastal style Sea Bags are known for.

Community-Driven

Community-Driven

Our work is rooted in the working waterfronts, sailing communities, and people who simply love the water. We collect sails one at a time from passionate boaters, partner with local organizations and community events, and employ skilled craftspeople at home in Maine, so every sail bag carries a story of place and people.

Sustainability Focused

Sustainability Focused

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. By repurposing old sails and utilizing every scrap with eco-minded production processes, we divert significant material from landfills and avoid new resource consumption; since 1999 we’ve kept over 1.5 million pounds of material out of the waste stream. The result: sustainable, durable products designed to be used, repaired, and treasured.
