Collecting & Processing Sails
Collecting & Processing Sails
We acquire sails in a variety of ways:
- Individual collection through our retail stores
- Sail collection drives through sailing communities
- Scheduled pick-ups from individuals and yacht clubs
We plan for a full load of sails before each lot heads back to Maine. At our warehouse, we begin the process of washing and organizing the sails to be made into bags.
Hand Cut Sails
Hand Cut Sails
Each sail is laid out and meticulously templated by hand to minimize material waste. We start with any notable numbers or insignias; we call this the "sweet spot" of the sail and reserve those panels first to be used in our vintage bags. Then we template the rest of the sail and cut panels by hand.
Handmade Details
Handcrafted Details
Every splice and stitch is done by hand in our Maine workshop. Each sail is unique, which requires an artist's eye, assembling the bag in just the right way to highlight the sail's innate features, like grommets and character marks. Quality craftsmanship is our top priority, which is why each bag is diligently reviewed for quality control to ensure the final product is built to last.
Design Process
Design Process
Our design team is always hard at work dreaming up the next fan-favorite design or bag shape. Planning designs for each season starts months in advance, poring through our collection of sails, evaluating how we can highlight textures and stitching that makes each sail uniquely beautiful. Then our team selects the component pieces like New England-made rope, responsibly produced leather, and colorful canvas to best accentuate the design and innate sail qualities.
A Continuous Cycle—Closing the Loop
A Continuous Cycle—Closing the Loop
Our sustainable mission doesn't stop once we have finished a bag. Our mission expands to all aspects of our business including our shipping and logistics. We minimize single-use packaging in our customer orders and reuse boxes when we're shipping products from our workshop to our retail stores. We also combine our retail deliveries with sail trade pick-ups, honoring the Sea Bags' mission of sustainability and minimizing our miles driven.
